Willow Wood Hospice, based in Ashton-under-Lyne, has been providing specialist palliative and end-of-life care for adults across Tameside and Glossop since 1999.

While many people associate hospices with end-of-life care, Willow Wood offers much more – supporting individuals living with any life-limiting illness to live as well as possible for as long as possible.

Care and services

The Hospice’s dedicated teams deliver high-quality, compassionate and dignified care for both patients and those closest to them. Services include Wellbeing, Therapy, Dementia and Family Support.

Around 70% of care is provided by Willow Wood’s Community Services team – in the Hospice and in a patient’s own home. The other 30 per cent is care provided on our Inpatient Unit, which has 10 rooms overlooking peaceful gardens.

Each year, the Hospice supports over 700 local people, and all of its services are provided completely free of charge to patients, families, and carers.

Community support

As a registered charity, Willow Wood Hospice is not part of the NHS. It costs approximately £11,200 per day (£4.1 million annually) to run the Hospice, yet only 22% of this funding comes from the Government.

Willow Wood relies on the generosity of the local community to fund the remaining costs through:

  • Donations
  • Organising or supporting fundraising events
  • Buying pre-loved items from our charity shops
  • Leaving gifts in their Wills
  • Joining the weekly lottery
  • Volunteering

Willow Wood’s charity shops across Tameside and Glossop generate around a quarter of the Hospice’s income every year.

For every £1 received from the Government, the Hospice provides around £5 worth of care to the community.

The power of volunteers

Around 500 volunteers support the Hospice, contributing more than 50,000 hours each year – equivalent to saving the charity approximately £1.1 million annually. Their dedication plays a vital role in everything Willow Wood does, making a positive impact both at the Hospice and across its charity shops.
